Dubai

[ITALIAN VERSION - Dubai, la città incredibile] - English version available at the end of this article

Night view of dancing fountains in Dubai Mall : Foto stock

Embed from Getty Images

View of the new promenade on Dubai Marina : Foto stock

[ENGLISH VERSION] - Dubai, the incredible city

And here we are!

Aerial view of Dubai with some fog at sunset : Foto stock

This time it's up to the beautiful and incredible Dubai! One of the most visited cities in the world thanks to the international airport with the most traffic in the world managed by the Dubai Airports Company. This is also the headquarter of our favourite Air Company :

Many people ask me "But what are you looking for in Dubai? What is there to see?" ... Well, that's right there, the beauty ... we've been there twice in 4 years and it's amazing to see with which speed and with what capacity this city is transformed and realizes architectural projects and attractions that are absolutely unthinkable for us.

From an ethical point of view, we would have to write and discuss for a long time about the history of the last decades of this city and its seemingly meaningless development. However, the Emirs must be credited with being forward-looking from the point of view of economic growth, aware that oil will no longer be the future.
Dubai is a city that I could easily define among the "safest" in the world. Local law based on Islamic (moderate) dictates is respected and enforced without too much trouble.
You have to consider that only 20% of the population of Dubai is of "local" origin, the remaining 80% are foreigners who live and work there, including Europeans.
Most of the inhabitants have Asian origins (India and Pakistan in the first place), as they are the engine that drives the hundreds of hotels and restaurants in the city.

That said, you will not be aware of this majority, as most are invisible to tourists because they work in kitchens, construction companies, cleaning companies and so on. What you will see are the tens or hundreds of luxury cars and boats from which businessmen or young Arab princes often come and their jeweled girlfriends / spouses (all or almost rigorously veiled).

But we return to our journey. Let's start with the weather. Dubai has a sub-Saharan climate and this means that it is the least suitable place to be visited during our summer where temperatures reach 50 ° C.
The Burj Khalifa - Dubai
From November to April the temperatures are much more pleasant. The dry and windy climate offers daytime thermal escapes between 20 and 30 degrees. Obviously for those who want there is the opportunity to swim in the calm waters of the Persian Gulf.

The beaches in the city are almost all artificial (the sand is that of the desert and is often reported artificially because building here and they have modified the coast) and so do not imagine the crystal clear waters of the tropics or coral reefs. The sea water is clean and warm enough, but the transparency depends on the suspended sand :-)

Diving enthusiasts can still dive in several nearby sites and admire shipwrecks and mini reefs.
In Dubai, of course, we speak Arabic, but everyone knows English and many sometimes understand and speak Italian ;-)

The best way to get around in Dubai is the taxi (quite cheap) or the elevated subway that goes through the "new" part of the city to Dubai Marina and beyond. In some places the metro "crosses" the Tram, which makes a fairly comfortable loop path. Also for those wishing to visit "La Palma", the artificial island that has just the shape of a palm tree, there is a monorail that leads from the coast to the beautiful hotel Atlantis The Palm (in which there is also a park of water funs). For the more resourceful you can still rent the car, but watch out for traffic ... sometimes at certain times it can be very challenging!
View of the new promenade on Dubai Marina : Foto stock
The distances in Dubai are always quite remarkable ... it's not exactly a city to explore on foot, except for some destinations. So my advice is to organize your days well to try to maximize all travel.

For example, if you decide to see the "old" part of Dubai, plan to leave with your morning hike (depending on where you obviously decide to stay) starting from the Al Fahidi district, continuing through the tissue souk, a ride on the Dubai Creek and then after crossing the "river", take a trip to the spices and gold souks.

I assure you that you will need at least the whole day also because in the area there are several museums and cultural centers that deserve a break.

[EXCURSIONS]
The most "popular" excursions are obviously those that take you into the desert to ride the dunes with powerful off-road vehicles. Or, still in the desert, you can go by camel, with the option of an Arab dinner in a tent. Very interesting are the camel races (national sport in these parts) and the activities related to the training of hawks (the favorite animals of local princes and emirs).

Do not miss a boat ride on Dubai Creek with an Abra, the typical local boat.
Must to see: the various Suk of spices, gold and fabrics or silk.

If you want to get an idea of what Dubai was like a couple of centuries ago, you should definitely take a trip to the Al Fahidi fort, a late eighteenth-century building. Addendantrovi in its galleries to find historical evidence of the city. Not far from the fort is the district of Al Fahidi, one of the most characteristic places to visit in Dubai. You will find yourself immersed in a maze of narrow streets with low houses and aristocratic villas. Here the atmosphere of a thousand and one nights is more than assured.

Always on the subject of places of a thousand and one nights, but absolutely fake, is the Madinat Jumeirah, a small neighborhood that houses a luxurious resort, some restaurants and shops all set in perfect 1800s style.

Amusement parks are everywhere, including water attractions and the more "traditional" Lego, Warner and so on. The Dubai Botanical Park is home to beautiful floral "sculptures" and countless plants and flowers from around the world.

Finished ? But go ... at least one visit deserves the Dubai Mall, at the foot of the majestic Burj Khalifa skyscraper (which you can also visit to enjoy a breathtaking view from the 178th floor).

At the Dubai Mall you can admire its aquarium with a submerged cave where you can walk among sharks and tropical fish, for those who want there is also the possibility to dive for a swim with the bull sharks. Also in Dubai Mall there are the famous and beautiful dancing fountains of Dubai.

You have to consider that the Mall takes away at least half a day, so plan the tour so that for dinner you can book a table overlooking the fountains and enjoy good food (I recommend a Lebanese restaurant) and also the show of water and lights of the fountains .
Night view of dancing fountains in Dubai Mall : Foto stock
The visit to the Burj Khalifa is good to book in advance, there are usually nice queues, but if you want you can skip the queue paying (a lot) a priority ticket that allows you to climb up to 178th floor (about 400 meters high, the skyscraper measures in total over 800 meters). From there you can access the museum that illustrates the construction of this architectural marvel and the panoramic terrace (if the wind allows it) for a unique view of the city.

For the wealthiest, the Burj Khalifa houses the Armani Hotel and its exclusive restaurant terrace :-)

Vista panoramica di Dubai dal Burj Khalifa : Foto stock

In addition to the Dubai Mall, another symbol of unbridled consumerism is the Mall of Emirates which also includes the famous ski slope.

In the new area of Dubai the major attractions are located along the beaches and in the immediate surroundings.
Panoramic view of Marina Beach in Dubai : Foto stock
The Walk is a 3-kilometer linear walkway that crosses beaches, shops, hotels and various attractions in the Jumeirah Beach area. Another beautiful pedestrian path is the Jumeirah Corniche, 15km of track for jogging along the beach and cycling.

The Dubai Marina is another place to see. A neighborhood built around an artificial canal and home to many interesting places, in addition to resorts and various offices. From Dubai Marina you can take an excursion along the canal and along the coast using the Ferry that will take you to the famous Burj Al Arab, the world's most luxurious 7-star hotel.

The new attractions (which were being built when we were there last time) are the gigantic Ferris wheel on the Jumeirah beach and the "big frame" that allows you to make special photos of Dubai :-)

Who wants to access the Burj Al Arab, must necessarily be a guest of the hotel. The only alternative is to book a table at the restaurant, with obvious impacts on the wallet ;-)

[WHERE TO SLEEP]
The only thing not to worry about in Dubai is to find accommodation. The only thing to worry about in Dubai is how much you want to spend :-)

We have slept both in the hotel and in the apartment. Consider that the hotels are all of good quality especially because they are designed for wealthy tourists and therefore the rates are often in line. However, it is also possible to sleep with reasonable amounts.

The first time we went there were three of us and we found a very good offer in a Rotana hotel (https://www.rotana.com) that included breakfast (which is not discounted) and a spectacular 65sqm room overlooking the gulf.

The second time we came back four years later we were four :-) and since the hotels were almost all out of budget and we needed to cook for our baby of 18 months, we opted for a beautiful apartment in the Dubai Marina area . Amwaj Suites Jumeirah Beach Residence run by the Roda Hotels chain (http://www.roda-hotels.com/)

130sqm apartment with two bedrooms, three bathrooms, princely room and kitchen ... you must consider that the size of the rooms here are far different than the hotels of the rest of the world ...

Embed from Getty Images

However, hotels, resorts and apartments along the coast near the beaches are usually the most expensive. Prices fall in the surroundings of the old city and near the airport. They vary a little along the subway route that runs along the high-flowing road (6 lanes in each direction) that bears the name of the Sheikh Zayed * (who has been missing for several years) and the architect, in fact, of what the Emirates have become. United Arab today.

However, the way to save money is always there, it takes a lot of patience to find good deals either on the hotels or through the usual booking.com, tripadvisor, airbnb or even homeholidays.
* Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was emir of Abu Dhabi from 1955 to 2004 and president of the United Arab Emirates from 1971 to 2004. He is the father of Mansur bin Zayd Al Nahyan, president of Manchester City since 2008, and Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahayan, current President of the United Arab Emirates since 2004

[WHAT TO EAT AND WHERE]
Another thing you will not have to worry about in Dubai is the food! There are restaurants, supermarkets, fast food and street food anywhere and at any time of day or night. The various home delivery platforms like Uber Eats, Deliveroo and the like also work very well (in case you have got an apartment and you are too tired to go out for dinner after a day of hiking).

Embed from Getty Images

In Dubai there is no real local cuisine. Obviously the influence here is Arabic and so if you choose an Arab restaurant you are not wrong, but there is really anything ... from sushi to Chinese, from Thai to Lebanese, Italian of course everywhere with pizza and pasta ... hamburgers and salads and whoever he has and so forth.

We, when we rented the apartment we obviously decided that to save money and for the needs of the children we would have cooked most of the dinners and prepared the takeaway lunches. Near our accommodation there was a well-stocked Carrefour (right in the middle of Dubai Marina) inside which also had a butcher dedicated to non-Muslims who worked pork.

If you decide to book a hotel, check carefully that breakfast is included, often it is not, and as in the worst traditions made in the USA (successfully exported all over the world) is expensive.

[DUBAI WITH CHILDREN]
Obviously this being a blog for Family Travelers, our attention goes to our little nannies with the backpack. :-)
As I have already told you, Dubai is an absolutely safe city designed for families.

You will be amazed at how many children you will meet around and how many families (although the holiday may not be entirely cheap). The attractions are designed for families, the hotels are equipped for younger guests as well as restaurants and anything else.

You have to think that at the airport of Dubai there is an absolutely free courtesy stroller service that you can use once you get off your plane waiting to retrieve the luggage and the stroller that you have delivered to the hostes before your boarding. This just to give you an idea of what awaits you ...
L'hotel Burj Al-Arab di Dubai Al tramonto : Foto stock
Dubai has many medical centers, hospitals and pediatric centers. There are pharmacies everywhere and well supplied. Remember, however, that travel insurance must always be stipulated because any emergency medical examination is subject to payment and contingencies may always be there.

We never travel without a cover that ensures maximum serenity. We prefer to save on the hotel, but never on a serious insurance.

That said, remember that Dubai will host the Expo in 2020 and therefore the city is still in great evolutionary ferment.

Do not exist to ask and comment. We are waiting for you and we will be happy to give you all the appropriate information. Remember to follow us on our Instagram accounts too :-)

Seychelles

Camping in a tropical beach - Praslin island - Seychelles : Foto stock
[ESTATE 2017 - Italian language] - Go to the end of article for english version.

Embed from Getty Images
Fatto tutto ? Beh no, ora tocca alla macchina.

Come dite ?

[English Version] - [SUMMER 2017]

Who has never wanted to leave for the Seychelles? An archipelago of exotic islands in the Indian Ocean that has always attracted the curiosity and desires of all travelers. We have been there for about 3 weeks during the period of August (unfortunately we are often tied to the closing of the schools) with our two little dwarfs. Quiet, the temperatures are pleasant throughout the year with temperatures almost constant (about 27 ° ventilated and hot water).

When traveling with children, the planning and preparation of a trip always requires a greater percentage of time than the travels of a couple, especially because we have to evaluate all the unknowns and any inconvenience. Who wonders if a trip rather than another is suitable for children, the first question that must be asked is: "But I feel?", Because remember that they do not care if a trip is long or short, but it does matter with mom and dad. So if you are worried about long journeys or inconvenient journeys, do not stress too much and head for "simpler" places. A journey is a life experience and it will never ever be a source of stress, either for you or your children.

But let's move on to our exotic journey. We decide with about 8 months in advance (sometimes we do it even a year in advance, but it is often an exception, sometimes we even plan a few months in advance) to plan our trip. We choose the Seychelles for an alternative destination and begin to study what to see and what to do and above all how to get there.

After many estimates and doubts we throw ourselves on a Turkish Airlines offer (flights to the Seychelles generally cost at least € 1,000). Aware that our 16-month-old dwarf will not pay (because he has no right to the place) we book flights with a cradle request (often quite useless because tiny if the child is slightly grown up, but convenient as a glove and ensures the place in wider plane).

The flight with a stopover in Istanbul from Milan lasts almost 14 hours. We opt for the night ride in the hope that the youngest sleeps peacefully.

Then, since the Seychelles have hundreds of small islands, we focus on the 3 "classics" for our tour. Mahe where the capital Victoria resides with the international airport, Praslin and the beautiful La Digue.

Through the Air Seychelles website, we book Mahe-Praslin (A / R) internal flights served by a friendly 20-seat twin-engine for 20 minutes. Then via the website https://www.seyferry.com/it we book ferries to Praslin-La Digue (A / R).

Did everything? Well no, now it's up to the car. As with the children we do not want to move with the local buses that are well organized, cheap and go everywhere, we decide to book both the car in Mahe Praslin. There are many sites to which you can turn, I recommend starting from https://it.seyvillas.com where you will also find interesting information for the trip. A La Digue will not serve you as the only means that can circulate is the bike so you can rent them directly on the island unless you agree with the structure that will host you to make sure you have the bikes ready at your arrival.

At this point you just have to think about housing! Obviously the budget available plays a fundamental role. In Seychelles good quality hotels have medium to high prices and certainly do not suit the low-budget style. Of course, we are 4 and we need to have more space than a hotel room can offer and then we decide that the apartment is the best type of accommodation (after several searches). But here we must make several considerations, the first is cheap, there are fabulous apartments (practically the villas with swimming pool) and more modest, but well organized accommodations. Then you have to evaluate if you want to cook or if you want to try all the restaurants of the islands (we have preferred to shop and cook for economic reasons). Another thing to consider is the location of the apartment or hotel. If you have the car I suggest you move away a little from the towns (... so to speak), both for reasons of noise and is to have the opportunity to find an enchanting or convenient location.

For apartments and villas the sites are always the same, Airbnb, Homeholidays, but also Seyvillas or booking. However I suggest you compare prices on this website https://www.seychelles-accommodation.travel/

Some important note: Gasoline is expensive and cars are often catorci, if possible take a small off-road vehicle. Most supermarkets are run by Indians or Pakistanis, but you can find everything. In Victoria there are also a couple of shopping centers where you can shop with products of better choice. If you have time and want to buy fresh fish, tuna has very low prices compared to us.

As far as health is concerned, it is always good to hope that you do not need medical treatment abroad, but equip yourself with a good travel insurance before leaving and make sure that you cover all medical expenses and any travel problems (flight and baggage) ) here I always head towards worldnomads.com, but colombus.it also has good rates.

Ok, now that you've already spent almost 70% of your budget, you just have to think about things to do and see. Let's go by order:

[Mahe] - The capital of Victoria deserves at least a day to visit the small town, the market, the historic streets and the private island of Eden Island reserved for wealthy riches.

Then of course beaches ... beaches and beaches ... otherwise we are going to do?

The beautiful bays Beau Vallon, Grand Anse, Anse Royale, Anse A La Mouche, Anse Aux Pins, but generally where you turn there are Anse everywhere.

[Praslin] - Here a mention of honor deserves the rainforest Vallee de Mai where the famous Coco de Mer grows. Symbol par excellence of the Seychelles, it is a giant nut with "feminine" shapes as regards the female fruit, the male fruit is reminiscent of a giant penis. Yes, you got it right ... in fact the first sailors who landed here thought they had arrived in the earthly paradise J

However, apart from this, the forest is incredible and deserves at least 2/3 hours of visits along the various paths. Be aware of the opening hours as you pay an entry ticket. Generally it closes around 17.

Then of course also in Praslin the beautiful beaches are not lacking. Anse Lazio is perhaps the most famous, but they deserve the various Grand'Anse, Anse Takamaka, Anse La Blaugue and many others

[La Digue] - Here in the small island surrounded by greenery (like all others in the end), the most beautiful beach is the one that attracts visitors and filmmakers from all over the world. I'm talking about the wonderful Anse Source d'Argent. The majestic black granite rocks, typical of the Seychelles, alternate with small loops of white sand and the panorama and the surrounding sea are breathtaking. Then there are many other beaches, such as Anse La Reunion, Anse Severe, Anse Caiman, Petite Anse, all uniquely beautiful in their own way that are seen and "tested". Remember that here you only ride a bike! J

[Aldabra Atoll] This is the paradise for divers and snorklers and nature lovers in general from an animal point of view. It is formed by the islands of Picard, Polymnie, Malabar and Grande Terre and has one of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world.

Some faunistic notes. The Seychelles are famous for the giant tortoises that you will meet around mainly at La Digue, for the great flying foxes (or fruit bats) and for the colorful and almost harmless spider of the palms. Results images for palm spider For the rest the most interesting fauna can be found in the sea by snorkelling or scuba diving.

If you want to make excursions, on each island there are specialized centers that offer services and packages that vary from half day to mini cruise. The choice here too is purely personal and economic.

How do you say? I have not talked about children anymore? Oh yes, our little ones have enjoyed every km of the islands and every corner of beach or forest or other. Here you will find many families of travelers as also from the point of view of safety the islands do not offer particular dangers. Obviously, common sense must always be to guide your activities, avoid bringing gold and silver (more than anything because you risk losing them and you do not need them on the beach), children should always be kept under control, bring a first kit with you rescue for insect bites, jellyfish or various cuts.

The Seychelles do not require mandatory vaccinations. I do not remember seeing mosquitoes around, but insect repellent can be handy. For 50 skin protection always! Remember that you are in a tropical area ... here the sun makes itself felt. For children, but not only, I recommend the beach shirts, you can find valid and cheap even at Decathlon. Since the equipped beaches (umbrellas and sunbeds) are almost non-existent, apart from those of the resorts, ask those who host them if they have umbrellas to use in the various Anse. (but eye to the coconuts that when they fall on the head are bad) or equip yourself with fast-fitting curtains (we have always taken one at the Decathlon just for safety).

Clothing: Avoid carrying a ton of stuff ... the evening shoes and heel 12 will not serve you. Comfortable sandals and rubber shoes for the sea, swimming masks or goggles, at most fins if you do not want to rent them on the spot. A pair of lightweight hiking boots will be useful for the whole trip. Short-sleeved t-shirts and a sweatshirt for the evening. Short pants and light long trousers at best, a pair of jeans and rainproof cortinesi for emergencies. In the Seychelles the monsoons blow all year round with various rainy phases. So it is not uncommon for a few minutes to rain down on the beach. For our bad luck we also caught a storm that lasted 36 hours and that delayed a transfer between one island and another, but it was the only drawback of a trip ... heavenly :-)

I hope these few concepts will help you. Obviously for doubts or details please contact us, write a comment and share this blog if you liked what you read :-)
